Smartlook Is Shutting Down: The Full Timeline and What Shopify Stores Should Do
Smartlook is shutting down. No new paid plans have been sold since 31 May 2026, existing customers could not renew after 31 August 2026, every paid subscription ends by 31 August 2027, and on 30 September 2027 the platform is decommissioned and all remaining customer data is deleted. Those dates come from Smartlook’s own FAQ, which Smartlook now serves at its pricing URL.(source)
If you searched for Smartlook pricing, that is the answer: there is no price to pay, because there is nothing left to buy. If you are a Shopify merchant still running Smartlook on your store, the useful question is what to do before your current term runs out. This post lays out the timeline, what happens to your data, and a practical migration plan.
The Smartlook shutdown timeline
| Date | What Smartlook says happens |
|---|---|
| 31 May 2026 | End of Sale. No new paid Smartlook subscriptions are sold. |
| 31 August 2026 | End of Contract Renewals. No further renewals or expansions. Any paid subscription ends at the end of its current plan or next renewal date. |
| 31 August 2027 | Last Day of Support. All remaining paid subscriptions end, including annual renewals started by 31 August 2026. |
| 30 September 2027 | Platform decommissioned. Smartlook is deactivated and remaining customer data is securely deleted. |

As of this post, the first two dates have already passed. If you are on a paid Smartlook plan today, it has a fixed end date: the end of your current term. There is no renewal to fall back on.
What happens between your plan ending and the shutdown
Smartlook’s FAQ is specific here, and more generous than many wind-downs:
- When your paid plan ends, you drop to the Smartlook Free plan, which you can keep using until 30 September 2027. The FAQ says this access is “subject to the respective free plan limitations”, so expect less than you have now.
- Support continues online until 31 August 2027, with self-support documentation available until the platform closes.
- Your data is not moved anywhere. The FAQ states that Splunk will not migrate historical data from Smartlook to its new product.
- Export is on you. Smartlook strongly recommends exporting data before your paid subscription ends, and in any case no later than 31 August 2027. It points to its reports and exports features and its REST API for doing so.
The practical reading: the window in which you still have full paid access is shorter than the September 2027 headline date suggests. Plan around the end of your current term, not around decommissioning day.
Where Smartlook is going: Splunk Digital Experience Analytics
Smartlook, which says it has joined Cisco, is folding its core tools into Digital Experience Analytics, part of Splunk Observability Cloud. According to the FAQ, session replay, conversion funnels, heatmaps and journey maps continue there, alongside integration with Splunk’s Real User Monitoring and Synthetics products.
Two points matter for a Shopify store:
- It is not automatic. Current Smartlook subscriptions do not transition on their own. You have to contact an account manager or Smartlook support.
- It is a different kind of product. Smartlook’s own description is an “enterprise-grade platform” inside an observability suite. That is a natural home for an engineering team already on Splunk. For most Shopify merchants, who installed Smartlook to watch shoppers use a storefront, it is a much bigger purchase than the problem calls for.
A migration plan for Shopify stores
This is an afternoon of work, not a project, provided you start before your term ends.
- Find your end date. Check your Smartlook billing settings for the end of your current term. That is your real deadline for full paid access.
- Decide what you actually need to keep. Session recordings are rarely worth archiving in bulk; they go stale as soon as your theme changes. Funnel results, report numbers and the handful of sessions that explained a real problem are worth saving. Screenshot or export those.
- Install the replacement now and run it alongside Smartlook. A week of overlap lets you check the new tool is capturing what you expect before anything switches off.
- Rebuild your key funnels and segments in the new tool while Smartlook is still there to compare against.
- Remove the Smartlook script. If you installed through Google Tag Manager, delete the tag. If you pasted the snippet into your theme code, remove it there. Then load your storefront with the browser’s Network tab open and confirm nothing calls smartlook.com. A dead tracking script is dead weight on every page load.
Choosing a replacement, honestly
What you should move to depends on what you were using Smartlook for.
- If you are Shopify-only and want to see why shoppers do not convert: a Shopify-native app. Propel Replays installs as a theme app embed with no theme code edits, is measured at 0ms Core Web Vitals impact, filters replays by Shopify customer fields like order count and total spent, and flags unusually big orders, abandoned carts and abandoned checkouts through insight alerts. There is a free sampler plan at 750 pageviews a month, and paid plans start at $9.90/mo.
- If budget is the deciding factor: Microsoft Clarity is genuinely free with no traffic limits. We cover the tradeoffs in Microsoft Clarity pricing 2026.
- If you run several websites, not just a store: Mouseflow and Lucky Orange both work across platforms. See Mouseflow pricing 2026 and Lucky Orange pricing 2026 for what they cost and what each tier unlocks.
- If you used Smartlook for a native mobile app or crash reports: a storefront tool is the wrong replacement, ours included. Smartlook’s own FAQ describes Digital Experience Analytics as covering both mobile and web applications, so that path is worth evaluating on its own terms.

The honest verdict
Smartlook is handling its exit better than most acquired tools do: dated milestones, a free-plan grace period, and a clear warning that data will not be migrated. The risk for merchants is not a surprise shutdown. It is treating September 2027 as the deadline when your real deadline is the end of your current paid term, which may be much sooner.
Pick the replacement that matches the job you hired Smartlook for, run it in parallel for a week, save the few things worth saving, and pull the old script out.
